Yesterday we arrived on the Atacama area of Chile, and are staying within the small city of San Pedro. Atacama is maybe the driest area on this planet, and San Pedro is at an elevation of about 8,000 toes. That mixture might be fairly a punch. Fortuitously we’ve been at the same elevation the previous couple of days at CTIO, in order that isn’t too unhealthy. The arid air, nevertheless, is a unique story. Hydration is vital at this level.
Whereas Cerro Tololo had an nearly overwhelming magnificence to it, Atacama is a bit completely different. Magnificent desolation, to paraphrase Buzz Aldrin. However the arid and excessive situations of the area are precisely why ALMA is right here.
However that’s a narrative for tomorrow. For now it’s time to have a bit extra water, and get some sleep.
